What does the project do and how does it work?
Origin Energy is working with blockchain startup Power Ledger to test the potential of blockchain technology in Energy. The project focuses on energy consumption and production data of Origin's consumers and prosumers to understand the impact of peer-to-peer energy trading on consumer bills and Origin's revenues. The blockchain technology will enable prosumers to trade excess energy generated from solar rooftops with other consumers within their network.

Power Ledger, a blockchain technology solutions provider, looks to find new areas to deploy their peer to peer energy trading platforms. Origin Energy is a leading energy provider in Australia. Power Ledger and Origin Group are involved in the pilot to explore the benefits and challenges of Peer-to-Peer energy trading for both consumers and utilities.
Where is the project located and what is the size of the region of impact?
The pilot involves a detailed study of energy consumption and production patterns of 200 Origin consumers and prosumers over one year.
How far along is the project and are there relevant project milestones to consider?
Origin has completed the initial trial. In the trial, Power Ledger demonstrated the applications of agreed trading rules to facilitate the buying and selling of energy at varying rates and tariffs between different types of customers using blockchain. Based on the results of the trial, Origin decided to focus on further developing their home energy management and distributed energy solutions before launching additional customer trials focusing on P2P trading.
