Project Description
What does the project do and how does it work?
CEBN partnered with Power Ledger and Silicon Valley Power to deploy a Pilot geared towards tracking and creating provenance of clean energy produced and used for EV charging. This project is located in a six-story parking garage in San Jose, California which includes a distributed generation solar system and EV charging stations. The pilot installed a blockchain-based credit tracking system within the generation and charging station infrastructure to track both the production and the consumption of clean energy in accordance with California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). The system uses a separate meter from the master meter and can provide power to EV charging stations from both the installed distributed generation as well as from the local grid.
In Phase 1, the objective was to demonstrate the ability to accurately track and capture the creation and usage of clean energy to create and record credits on a near real-time basis. This objective was achieved and at present Silicon Valley is able to use the system to track and report clean energy credits to the state commission.
Who is involved in the project and why?
This project was a collaborative effort between Clean Energy Blockchain Network who sourced and developed the project, Power Ledger who provided the technology foundations, and Silicon Valley Power who served as the end users of the credits produced by the system.
Where is the project located and what is the size of the region of impact?
This project is located in San Jose, California in a parking garage equipped with a 370kW solar DG system and 49 EV charging stations.
How far along is the project and are there relevant project milestones to consider?
This project serves as the first phase of a two-phase project. The first phase is intended to prove and deploy the system on an operational level. The first phase has been completed and is currently active and operating. Phase two is currently in development and focuses on expanding transactable elements around the produced credits.
What are the value propositions associated with this project?
Being able to accurately track and trace clean energy production and usage on a near real-time basis which streamlines the compliance, collection, and reporting of clean energy credits in accordance with LCFS.
What is the problem statement that is being addressed with this project?
Of the 4-basic functions of a database, create, read, update, and delete (CRUD), token, or credit creation ideally relies only on the create and read functions. Within this credit or token context, update and delete indicate previous errors or omissions in a process. As blockchain systems focus solely on create and read functions, with an emphasis on accuracy and trust in the create function, blockchain is ideally suited for applications surrounding token, credit, and attribute tracking.
