Project Description
What does the project do and how does it work?
The project looks to establish ways communities can offset existing energy costs and allow prosumers to monetize their renewable energy investments by selling their excess energy peer-to-peer. The Pilot aims to track the generation and consumption of all trading participants and settle energy trades on pre-determined terms and conditions in near real-time.
Who is involved in the project and why?
Power Ledger, a blockchain technology solutions provider, looks to find new areas to deploy their peer to peer energy trading platforms. KEPCO is a leading energy utility in Japan. KEPCO intends to use power ledger's energy trading platform to support the development of Virtual Power Plants (VPP), where consumer-owned generation and storage capacity can be used to meet local energy demands. Power ledger's platform will be used to facilitate and monitor energy trading between participants to increase the incentive for the development of renewable distributed energy resources (DER’s)
Where is the project located and what is the size of the region of impact?
The Project is implemented at chosen sites in Osaka City, Japan. The trial will initially see meter data of 10 homes on power ledger's platform.
What are the value propositions associated with this project?
The project promotes the uptake of renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) and demonstrates how the Platform can be deployed and scaled in the Japanese market to support Virtual Power Plant technologies.
What is the problem statement that is being addressed with this project?
Blockchain provides technology for sharing excess energy from solar rooftops among neighbors in flexible and cost-effective ways.
