Project Description
What does the project do and how does it work?
In line with the efforts of the New York Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), the Brooklyn Microgrid (BMG), has developed a community-powered microgrid in Brooklyn allowing the participants to engage in a sustainable energy network and choose their preferred energy sources, locally. The project connects local consumers to local prosumers via a microgrid and looks to provide the ability to source power locally.
Who is involved in the project and why?
Siemens through their subsidiary Next47 and Con Edison play roles as project partners in this deployment.
Where is the project located and what is the size of the region of impact?
LO3 has connected more than 11 households in a Brooklyn, New York neighborhood via a blockchain enabled transaction platform.
How far along is the project and are there relevant project milestones to consider?
This project is a proof-of-concept, at some point seeks to facilitate the sale of power from prosumers to consumers on the microgrid. Brooklyn Microgrid will be launching a “simulated” energy marketplace in early 2019, prior to launching the live marketplace.
What are the value propositions associated with this project?
The BMG seeks to accomplish the following objectives: 1. Increase the amount of clean, renewable energy generated locally 2. Develop a connected network of distributed energy resources which will improve electrical grid resiliency and efficiency 3. Create financial incentives and business models that encourage community investment in local renewable energy
How is technology and innovation used to create value?
Blockchain serves as the transactional underpinning facilitating transactions between the parties on the network.
