Project Description
What does the project do and how does it work?
The Lazarettgarten Transactive Microgrid seeks to install microgrids supported by LO3 Energy’s transactive platform. Under the scheme, local solar panel owners will have the opportunity to become “prosumers” and sell their excess power to their closest neighbors through the platform.
Who is involved in the project and why?
The Lazarettgarten Transactive Microgrid is a collaborative project in Germany between LO3 Energy working with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and local energy provider EnergieSudwest. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology seeks to evaluate the project’s impact on the electricity grid, electricity prices and consumer satisfaction.
Where is the project located and what is the size of the region of impact?
The project covers a 3.8-hectare community with 130 residences and 19 businesses.
How far along is the project and are there relevant project milestones to consider?
This is a test concept which looks to demonstrate how existing regulations can be revised to foster the deployment and integration of further transactive microgrids both in the region and throughout Europe.
What are the value propositions associated with this project?
Prosumers on the system will define pricing and usage, while LO3 and its partners work to help users on the system maximize their energy cost-efficiency through time-of-use rates and access to variable energy mixes. In addition, the developers also plan to use the effort to drive additional solar PV and battery storage installations in the area to be integrated with existing supplies.
What is the problem statement that is being addressed with this project?
Blockchain technology provides the transactional foundation for the transactions going between parties on the system.
